Bernie Wrightson conjures a chilling symphony of shadow and light on this awesome PUBLISHED PINUP page from Tales from the House of Mystery paperback, from the story titled: "YOU ONLY DIE ONCE!" only 7 pinups were created for this entire novel and this was one of the very best! Wrightson's rich, inky blacks swallow the viewer whole, while cobweb-thin textures whisper of decay and dread. Each stroke feels alive, steeped in a creeping, gothic atmosphere that only Wrightson could summon. This is more than horror -- it's an art form, with Wrightson weaving nightmares into reality with terrifying precision. This was drawn at the exact same time Wrightson created SWAMP THING #1 for DC! This piece is a great precursor to Wrightson's FRANKENSTEIN NOVEL drawings with the cross hatching all over with several skulls and over a dozen eerie looking glass beakers, multiple skulls, a vulture and a full body shaman skeleton on the wall with a chain around it's neck! With all of this incredible background artwork, we barely notice the 2 main figures of a man and an Indian warrior playing an evil board game on the small wooden table. Drafted in ink over graphite on 11.5" x 17" art board with a 7.3" x 12.25" image area. Dated by Wrightson '72 at the lower right of the image area with his classic early 1970s signature.
