Cosmic master Jim Starlin illustrated this cover for the 1994 trade paperback release of his graphic novel, "The Death of Captain Marvel". This was a milestone story in Marvel history when it first appeared in 1982's Marvel Graphic Novel #1. While most superhero deaths take place during battles, the Kree soldier Mar-Vell, AKA Marvel's first Captain Marvel, passed away from cancer following exposure to nerve gas eight years earlier. The story is a unique one in which the other Marvel heroes gather to say goodbye to their dying friend. On this cover we see several of Marvel's most important heroes gathered around the dying Mar-Vell. Present are Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Hulk, the Thing, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Mister Fantastic and Drax the Destroyer. The legendary Starlin depicts each character perfectly. The respect given "The Death of Captain Marvel" is evident when you consider that Mar-Vell has stayed dead now for over 43 years. In the soap opera-like reality of the Marvel and DC Universes, most comic book deaths are reversed within a few years. Even other long-term superhero deaths like Bucky Barnes, the Barry Allen Flash and the Jason Todd Robin were all eventually reversed. Mar-Vell passing away from cancer made his death seem more realistic and likely accounts for why no one has ever reversed it. As most Starlin collectors know... The 1982 Death Of Captain Marvel artwork were all drawn in marker and those pages are sadly fading away. this art is fully pencils and inks on 10" by 15" art board and is signed by the great JIM STARLIN in lower left margin.
