This preliminary for plate #3 offers a nice behind-the-scenes look at his conception of the Harfoots, Stoors, and the Fallohides, which were the three original divisions of hobbit-kind that inhabited swampy areas. Graphite on 7.25" x 10" onion skin paper. Light toning, edge and handling wear, and in Very Good condition.
