Jack Kirby was a big fan of mythology, and the lion's head mask does put us in mind of the story of Hercules defeating the Nemean Lion and wearing its pelt. That is why he was also known as "The Lion of Olympus." Is there a connection here? We may never know. This fantastic and highly detailed piece is produced in graphite on illustration board at a side angle. You can see the very faint rough pencil strokes where the character's shoulders, arms and chest were started, so there was more intended for this powerful piece. Measures 10.25" on 13.75" x 13.25" thick art board. On Hold
