Check cout this quite RARE Thimble Theatre Daily Comic Strip drawn by Charles "Doc" Winner (attributed) dated 1-25-38 (King Features Syndicate, 1938). Popeye the Sailor asks Wimpy if he plans to be the bride of the sea monster, to which Wimpy confidently responds in the negative. Unfortunately, it seems poor Olive Oyl has been chosen by the Goons instead! This strip hails from the legendary Thimble Theatre series, originally created by E.C. Segar, who had served as the regular artist since 1919 but fell severely ill with leukemia the same month this strip was published. During his absence, it is well known that Doc Winner ghosted some of the daily and Sunday episodes between 1938 and 1939. While this particular strip is attributed to Winner due to the absence of Segar's distinctive cigar-shaped signature, Popeye strips from the 1930s rarely surface for sale, making this an exceptional collector's gem. Rendered in ink and screentone over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 20.5" x 4.5", matted out to 24.75" x 8.75". ALL art on our website (including this one) are able to be purchased with VERY fair time payments, and trades are always considered towards "ANY" art on our website! Just send us an email to mikeburkey@aol.com and we can try to work something out.
