Check out this very nice "HISTORIC" BRONZE AGE 1970 MARVEL page, which was penciled by the great Sal Buscema, and inked by the great Jim Mooney, from the story titled: "Confrontation!" Marvel's long-running team known as "The Defenders" officially got their start in late 1971 in Marvel Feature #1, but the story that first brought together the characters that would make up the initial line-up of the team occurred here in 1970 in Sub-Mariner #34 and #35, where Namor teamed up with the Hulk and the Silver Surfer. These issues have become known as the "Defenders Prelude" two-part story, and have become quite collectible as interest in the team has picked up steam over the past few years. On this Sal Buscema page from Sub-Mariner #35, we have original Defenders members Sub-Mariner, Hulk and Silver Surfer. They take on none other than the Avengers--Thor, Iron Man, and Goliath (Clint "Hawkeye" Barton). The highlight of the page is a battle between The Hulk and Thor. The opening panel features Lady Dorma, the long time love of the Sub-Mariner who made her first appearance way back in the seminal Marvel Comics #1 (1939). She died soon after this story page was published, in Sub-Mariner #37.
